Dazework

Back in Tucson after seven months making sculpture installations in Boston and Cape Cod...I started thinking...how can I connect my Tucson home base with my East Coast works?  While I'm kicking around ideas in my head, my hands are twisting wire into tiny sculptures I can tie around my neck for decoration.  Here's a day's work:

Sensational Seagrass

Here we are, installing Beneath II, with 800 metal tubes planted directly into the lawn.  Inspired by seagrass, my aim was to create a sculpture planted in circular swirls that follow the natural slope of the land.   Hopefully, people of all ages, are enticed to leave the asphalt sidewalk and stroll, crawl or roll right into the art installation.
You may visit Beneath II, at 67 Grove Street, Sandwich, MA  from May - October 2013.  It is on display with works by three other artists in the outdoor art exhibit called, Moving Landscapes, at Heritage Museums and Gardens.
When you go, I'd love to see a photograph of yourself and friends in and around the tubes... post it on my facebook page if you think of it..Angela Rose Art.   Have fun!

Thanks to Christine Hochkeppel, photographer for the Cape Cod Times for taking these photos.  For more photos of the group installation visit the online gallery:

Doubling Down

Double the number of metal tubes, with just 10 days left before install...who DOES that?

I like to say the "Landscape made me do it."

Responding to site is a lot like being responsive to loved ones...when they need something, call for something, desire something, well, you just naturally want to try to meet the need.  It's like that with building sculpture in the landscape...the landscape becomes a co-creator, and if I can tune in to what it tells me...the experience is just that much more thrilling.

In order to meet this new 'requirement,' yesterday, I hired one more intern, ordered 500 more tubes and 200 more rebar.  I have to wait a few days before they arrive... and the clock is ticking.

I'm calm though, because the process, whether it's 100 tubes or 750 tubes is the same...so all I have to do, really, is work the process.  Here it is in photos:

Each tube has a sticky bar code label that has to be removed.

Each tube gets a cap glued onto one end.

Each tube is gently bent,
like a blade of grass blowing in a breeze.

Delight in the Making

When I create sculpture for a garden, beside taking into consideration the terrain and the plants that inhabit the space, I like to imagine the people who will be visiting it.  I ask myself, "what can I build that will make people put down their i-stuff and pause for art and nature?"

My aim is to inspire men, women and kids to walk, crawl or roll right into the art installation.
I want them to become one with the art, which has already become one with nature (since it's usually positioned along with the plants, in the soil.)

The answer to my question is always, "whatever will make you put down your i-stuff."

Then I go on to have a delightful time constructing the work.   I figure, that if I'm having
fun making the sculpture, there's a good chance the audience will have fun viewing it.

Daily Dirt

I find that getting my feet in the dirt  (shoes or not) on a daily basis keeps my world upright.  My new studio, "The Barn," is nestled between a thick woods and a small patch of lawn on a little neighborhood cul-de-sac in Harwich, MA. A daily dose of Dirt.  Ahhhhhhh.

Seeds of Change

The theme - Seeds of Change - will showcase how the region’s best green thumbs are fearlessly embracing new plants, methods and materials to increase the beauty, the bountiful harvest and the ecological friendliness of their gardens and outdoor spaces.

Exhibitors Angela Rose and La Vita Bella Garden Design present  Beneath, a sculpture garden inspired by the shapes, forms and textures found on the ocean floor.   Undulating metal tubing sculpture and sensuous plant specimens that thrive on natural rainfall demonstrate the ecological principals of wise water usage for the artful garden.
